What To Do If Your Engine Overheats

Austin Pattillo's Blog | What To Do If Your Engine Overheats

You are driving and suddenly a light comes on in your dash and smoke begins to fly out of the hood of your vehicle...

Your engine Is overheating, do you know what to do?

  • First, you need to pull over safely.
  • You need to turn your vehicle off, after you use OnStar or any other service for help.
  • Get out of your vehicle.
  • Do NOT try to open your hood. It takes approximately 30 minutes for your engine to cool once it is overheated. You can get burned if you try to access your engine prior to at least 30 minutes.
  • Once the vehicle has cooled, you can check your coolant/antifreeze or hoses for and leaks or blockages.

Until it is cleared by a professional, you should not continue to drive your vehicle. However, you should have it looked at by a service technician as soon as possible.
