SCARY LOOKING LIGHT coming with cold weather!

TPMS LIGHT (TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR SYSTEM) can be a VERY scary light on your dash (especially when it is flashing).  TPMS lights have been a requirement on ALL NEW vehicles since 2007.  The purpuse of the TPMS light is to alert you when tire pressure is too low and could to create unsafe driving conditions. If the light is illuminated, it means your tires could be underinflated, which can lead to unusual tire wear and possible tire failure.

What causes your tires to lose pressure overnight?  Tire pressure can decrease about 1 PSI for every 10 degrees that the temperature drops outside.  TPMS sensors are designed to activate when tire pressure goes below 25% of the manufacturers recommended pressure.  TPMS light may disappear after you've driven the vehicle and your tires have warmed up causing them to expand and reach back into the safe zone.  If your light comes on, check your tire pressure and get the pressure back to the recommended pressure (This can also help with better fuel economy).   If you get tired of constantly having to put air in your tires, I recommend replacing them with nitrogen instead of air.  Nitrogen keeps your tire pressure more consistant and does not contain moisture (keeping your wheels from rotting).

Where can you find your vehicles recommended tire pressure from the manufacturer?  Tire pressure recommendations can be found right next to your VIN PLATE on your drive side door or door trim.  (Pictured)
