Reducing the Spread of That Ping in Your Windshield

Austin Pattillo's Blog | Reducing the Spread of That Ping in Your Windshield

One of the worst places to get pinged is on your windshield. Just the right tap from flying rocks or other debris can send your glass cracking. These cracks can spread quickly and ruin the look of your car, not to mention, obstructing your view. If you want to get more mileage out of your windshield before replacing it, never fear. Here are a few tips (depending on your skill level) to prevent it from spreading.

  • Windshield Repair Kit – There are lots of different windshield repair kits on the market and if you are pretty handy, you can do this. Most of the windshield repair kits contain a specialized resin and an adaptor but if this method seems too risky, don’t fret! There are other tricks you can do to keep that crack from taking over your windshield.
  • Super Glue It - If the crack is tiny, you can use cyanoacrylate glue, otherwise known as Super Glue. Use the tip of the Super Glue nozzle to force the glue into the small crack(s). Once it dries, the glue will help hold the crack together long enough to get it repaired.
  • Clear Nail Polish – Applying clear nail polish to a clean crack in the windshield has yielded some positive results. While this is even a shorter-term fix than the Super Glue, it will buy you some time to get to your service repair shop.
  • Keep it Shaded – Keeping your windshield cool in the summer heat by parking in the shade can keep the temperature down inside your car thus relieving the pressure on your windshield.

Ask a professional to determine whether your crack can be repaired. If not, they can always replace your windshield. Hopefully, the tips mentioned above can reduce the severity of the crack until you get it repaired or replaced.
